[Talmai's Cobblery, Salesroom]
Wiping his hands on his leather apron, Talmai emerges from the stockroom at the first sound of an approaching customer. With one ham-sized, callused hand, he points first to the catalog lying on the low counter, and then to a makeshift wooden rack with sample shoes, boots, slippers and sandals. With the other hand, he brandishes a measuring stick, almost like a club. You smile and examine his wares. You also see a threadbare plush sofa and a low stool.
